Wharton is the oldest business program in the country and was founded by Joseph Wharton in 1881. The school is part of the University of Pennsylvania and consists of an MBA program and an undergraduate program, as well as an executive program and Wharton West in San Francisco. There are approximately 1600 full time MBA students, and the same number of undergraduate students.
Admissions
The Wharton Admissions process is deliberately transparent. Current students and alumni work hard to help prospective students understand the school, and are generally open and available for questions. The Admissions website is extensive and involves student blogs and a forum (Student-2-Student) for prospective students to ask questions and discuss admissions issues amongst themselves.Visiting Wharton is a straightforward process that can be coordinated through the admissions office. Visiting classes and attending lunch with a current student gives prospective students a taste of the academic and social environment.
Academics, especially demonstrated quantitative abilities, are important to Wharton admissions. Along with baseline academic ability, proven skills in leadership and teamwork are valued. Equally important, yet less tangible is the "fit" with the Wharton culture. Meeting and speaking with Wharton alumni and students is the best way to understand the fit issue, and will help when writing about "Why Wharton" in the admissions essays.
