Home of the case method of business education, Harvard Business School brings, “the complex and dynamic realities of business analysis and decision making into the classroom.” The school’s mission is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world.

History

In 1908, HBS opened its doors with about 80 students a 15 faculty members. A few years later, faculty began inviting businessmen in to present real problems to students. This “problem method” was the precursor to the case method, which was established as the school’s primary teaching method in 1924. The Harvard Business Review was founded in that same period, and continues to serve as a valuable resource to professionals and academics worldwide. The school moved to its current location across the Charles River from Harvard’s main campus when the residential campus was completed in 1927. By that time, more than 750 students were enrolled in the program.

Since 1997, HBS has opened a number of research centers around the world, in California, Hong Kong, Latin America, Japan, Europe, and India. Today, approximately 900 students enroll in the MBA program each year.
