Manhattan GMAT Instructor: David Mahler
David Mahler
New York, NY
David found teaching in much the same way he's found many of the best things in life, completely accidentally. A BA in Psychology from Dartmouth left him with an education, but not a career. Serendipity had a friend remind David that good board scores and lack of direction mean one thing in New York City: test prep. So he joined one of those other test prep companies thinking it would make a nice transition into whatever it was he was actually going to do with his life, and then quickly realized he had found it.

Fortunately, he also found a way to make a long-time dream come true. In 2005 David took a break from the SATs, packed his bags, and headed down to Chile to teach ESL (English as a Second Language). Although the internet is now littered with websites, forums, blogs and the like warning people not to accept a position with precisely the institute that David joined, the experience proved to be everything he hoped it would be (minus a livable wage). While still in Chile, David and a colleague began to wonder just how hard it would be to start their own ESL school. Several months later, when they returned to the States, they found out.

With that adventure at an end, fortune once again smiled on David when his brother suggested he check out Facebook, as they now have (had?) a section with job postings, one of which was for Manhattan GMAT. On a wing and a prayer, he took the GMAT, scored a 790, and has since been welcomed into the fold. David is excited to be working with Manhattan GMAT and to see where the rest of his life will take him.
