Kara Thornton: GMAT Tutor in Boston
Kara Thornton
Boston, Massachusetts
Kara spent her childhood as an Air Force brat, exposing her to more teachers in a year than most students see in their entire elementary career. Ask her where she’s from and she will tell you she spent her “formative years” in New Jersey (there are photos of big bangs to prove it), and has been East Coast-based ever since. She attended college at Duke University, where she tutored tutored Durham High School students while pursuing a versatile, employer-friendly psychology degree.

After living in DC for a few years, working in health care consulting, Kara finally decided to go to business school. With a 770 GMAT score under her belt, she headed to Philadelphia to attend Wharton, graduating in 2003 in the top 5% of her class. While at Wharton, Kara was a teaching assistant for introductory accounting and supply chain management, and tutored students in a variety of subjects, including finance, accounting, and operations. She found she had both a natural knack and true enjoyment of teaching.

Following business school, Kara decided to pursue the non-traditional path of management consulting, joining Bain & Company as a consultant in the firm’s Boston office in 2003. A little over a year of the consulting lifestyle was enough for her, and she hung it up in 2005 to stay at home with her new baby.

Although life as a full-time mom presented its fair share of challenges, Kara began to contemplate starting her own tutoring business in order to re-enter the working (read: income-generating) world while maintaining a flexible schedule. As luck would have it, she stumbled across a job posting for Manhattan GMAT on the Wharton job board, and the rest is history.

Kara lives in Brookline, Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and two cats. In her down time, Kara enjoys running, reading, traveling, and staying current on all celebrity gossip (although admittedly, these activities have been sharply curtailed by parenthood). Current favorite reads include “Where Is Baby’s Mommy?”, “Toes, Ears, Nose!”, and “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?"

Feedback From Kara’s Recent Students

“Kara is very approachable and friendly. Her interactions were always positive and supportive. She encouraged all students to participate with her engaging techniques, and also congratulated progression and development in the students throughout the course.”

“Kara is excellent at comprehending questions that arise from students when they get the wrong answers, especially in the Math problems. On a number of occasions she brilliantly understood why I made a mistake and proposed a great method to prevent the error from happening again.”
