Chris Berman
Los Angeles, California |
Once upon a time in America, Chris Berman graduated from Northwestern with honors in European diplomatic history, a field both unfashionable and tedious to his listeners.
While largely resting on his laurels for two years before graduate school, he fell in with evil companions, who preyed upon his romantic notion of someday pawning his Phi Beta Kappa key for a drink. So swayed, he instead went to a method acting school in New York . . .and then on to sporadic appearances Off and Off-Off B’way, as well as on All My Children and The Guiding Light (when, as an ex girlfriend put it, they needed “designer scum”).
However, the many conceptual parallels between the Method and the GMAT mindset (he kids you not!) led him to a successful and acclaimed GMAT tutoring practice. He is very proud of his tutoring career (partly because, as an actor, it kept him out of restaurants except as a customer). Recent students wrote, “Chris is a brilliant instructor. . . His humor, examples, and resonant voice made the concepts clear and the class lively and exciting . . . He has the ability to transform a dull and difficult subject into a lively and well-informed discussion. He is an excellent communicator and educator. . . His explanations are so clear, eloquent and expressive . . . Chris is one of the best instructors that I have ever had."
Mr. Berman has also taught college mathematics and worked as an editor and writing coach (“Have annoying comments, will travel”). Eventually moving to Hollywood (it’s all true!), he has continued to tutor, while also writing screenplays -- sometimes for money -- and working on “the novel”, when he’s really depressed. (Once in a while, he still acts in indie films.) He joined Manhattan GMAT early in 2003 and teaches company classes and private students in Los Angeles and Orange County. He is currently teaching Manhattan GMAT courses for the Boeing Corporation.
Feedback From Chris' Recent Students
“Chris was very well organized and clear about how to approach the test. Constantly reminding the class of how to approach problems helped me to be more comfortable with the test. Also, it was entertaining to see the materials presented with some humor.”
“Chris uses great examples to illustrate his points. He simplifies complex problems and is patient until everyone gets it.”
