Manhattan GMAT Instructor, Haakon Brown
Haakon Brown
Los Angeles, California

Originally from Rhode Island, Haakon ventured to the Big Apple at 17 when he began studying mechanical engineering at Columbia University. Upon graduation, he decided that working in engineering really wasn’t his thing and instead began working in IT consulting, first for CSC Consulting and then subsequently Deloitte Consulting. After four years in consulting (and eight years in New York City) he did the typical consulting thing and headed back to business school in New England at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, graduating with an MBA in 2001.

A victim of both the downturn in the economy and his quest for the "perfect job", Haakon began teaching and tutoring the GMAT to pay the bills and do something worthwhile and rewarding. During a particularly memorable class it was suggested by a number of his students that he teach business school, which sounded like a pretty good idea to him. As a result, Haakon recently finished up his PhD in marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and began his career in academia as an Assistant Professor of Marketing at California State University in San Bernardino. Haakon scored a 770 on the GMAT.

Inside the classroom you might hear him doing one of his infamous impersonations, which range from Dr. Evil to Yoda. Outside the classroom, Haakon can be found either spending time with his wife, Nancy, and their two sons, Nicholas (2) and Sebastian (2 months), or in his office at CSU-SB, preparing for class or trying to come up with the next big idea in consumer research. He is an avid New England sports fan (even though he now lives in Southern California), and also enjoys cooking, reading, music, photography, and the piano.
