Post subject: wide split on the gmat

I took the gmat this morning and scored a 700 (92%). Normally I would not think about re-taking, but I am concerned over the split. I got a 45 in verbal (98%) but only a 39 (57%) in math. Do you think I should retake?

Thanks for your inquiry.

Generally speaking, the benchmark for excellence on the GMAT is a 700 with an 80th percentile on both the quantitative and the verbal sides of the exam. Also, generally, if you are going to have an imbalance, it is better (as if this is a choice) to have an imbalance toward the verbal side, as a very low quant score can indicate that you might have trouble handling the MBA curriculum. These are not rules but are guidelines and we have definitely seen candidates get into top schools with such imblanaces or even scores under 600. Still, I would still recommend that you take the test again. Of course, there is one important caveat – you should only take the test again if you think you can do better.
