 Post subject: What to Expect?
Post Posted: Sat Oct 18, 2008 2:48 pm
Hi

I have taken 4-5 practice tests over the last few days and scored near 650 in all of the tests with higher scores in Quant and Moderate performance in Verbal. I have read one article on MGMAT which says that scoring high in verbal would be essential to break through the 700 barrier.

With my GMAT a day away, I am going with the thought that I will be scoring around 650. What is the best I can expect at thet score, which schools based on the average/median GMAT scores of the applicants taken in.

As a quick suggestion, I will appreciate if I can get a suggestion on which 5 to choose for sending the GMAT scores ?

Thanks

Thank you for your inquiry.

I think that you would be wise to ask the GMAT instructors about your expected performance on test day. With respect to the schools that you should report your scores to, this depends on a variety of factors – your career interests, your preferences in terms of urban living vs. college towns, case vs. lecture methods and much, much more. You will need to provide more information about your preferences and profile.

Sincerely,

Thanks Jeremy.

I am looking for a 2 year program in Finance.

My profile:
Undergrad from IIT(India)-Mechanical Engineering with a GPA of 7.25 (scale 10)
Work Experience - 4 years in a O&G Services Sector.

let me know if this is helpful. I believe this discussion, in some respects, lead me through the decision process.

I got a score of 640 on the GMAT (Q-49, V-28). What are my chances of getting into a good program?

I want to apply in the second round (deadlines ending first week of Jan 09 for most schools). Shall I take another test by first week of December (allowing 3 weeks to get official scores) to improve my chances?

Thank you for your inquiry.

I apologize for my delay. Feel free to post on my sticky thread – it will ensure that I respond to you much faster. It is far easier to monitor my dedicated thread.

I apologize but I am still not really getting much color behind your profile. If you have a 640 GMAT, no extra-curricular activities, no community service and no history of promotions, your chances of getting into a top-school are not very good. It would be very challenging for me to advise you properly, based on the information that you have provided. Can you share some more information on your background?

With regard to the GMAT, you should only take it again if you think you can do better. If you think that a 650 is the best that you can do, then you should not take the GMAT again, because you are within ten points of your target. How much better do you think you can do?

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald
