Can we use 'as' to compare noun/ noun phrases ( similar to the way we do for like)? I know that we generally use 'as' to compare clauses/ prepositional phrases.

No, we use "like" to compare nouns or noun phrases. For example,

Like chocolate, vanilla is a popular ice cream flavor. (looks good)

As chocolate, vanilla is a popular ice cream flavor. (eek! not good)
