I have taken the GMAT twice this year, once in March, once in August. I took the MGMAT course before the first test and had a new study schedule between tests and still scored the same 650 (Q:39, V:40).

I don't want to take the exam again as I put in a significant amount of time already and want to apply first round in the coming weeks.

I have a strong quantitative background with the exception of my GMAT discrepancy. I have A- average in heavy finance classes at a top 5 undergraduate BBA program as well as a strong use of quantitative analysis skills at a management consulting firm.

That being said, should I use the optional essay to explain the strengths in quant outside of the GMAT, i.e. relevant coursework and application of quantitative analysis in the workplace? Or, does it look bad to bring up this weakness?

As a note, my target school is Ross and also applying to UNC, Notre Dame, Indiana University.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Justin,

Thanks for writing in. The optional essay can be a good place to address such weaknesses as it demonstrates you are aware of the weakness and allows you to take control of the issue, as opposed to hoping the admissions office notices those counterpoints on your application.

If you choose to write this optional essay I advise you keep it to one paragraph (3-5 sentences) and avoid trying to justify your low score. Rather just plainly state that although your quant score is lower than they may like to see, you are confident you can handle MBA-level math due to your strong undergraduate performance, work experience, etc.

Best of luck!
