Sentence correction: Can/Could and Like vs/as?

Artificial intelligence emerged during the late 1950’s as an academic discipline based on the assumption that computers are able to be programmed to think like people.
(A) are able to be programmed to think like people
(B) were able to be programmed to think as people
(C) can be programmed to think as people can
(D) could be programmed to think like people
(E) are capable of being programmed to think like people do


I am stuck b/w C & D....Could you please help me with right answer and explaination?

I'd go with option D)

I think Option C) would have been right if it were: "can be programmed to think as people do". (Advice required here by Staff members!)

'Like' compares nouns, and is correctly used in option D) to compare ability of computers to think with that of people.

I'll go with C..just for the reason that as is used to compare the action which in this case is thinking.

I don’t like this one. Stick with OG and MGMAT questions please, otherwise you risk getting frustrated with questionable problems such as this one! I agree with Angad that C should say ”do” rather than ”can”, but otherwise it’s the best of five poor options..
