Rising inventories, when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth.

(A) when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead
(B) when not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, possibly leads
(C) when they were unaccompanied by corresponding sales increases, can lead
(D) if not accompanied by correspondingly increased sales, possibly leads
(E) if not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, can lead

OA is E...

But why 'correspondingly' in A and D is wrong??

I think correspondingly modify "unaccompanied" in A, which is a verb, and modify 'increased' in D, which is a adj... So my question is why an adv(correspondingly) modify a verb(unaccompanied in choice A) and an adj(increased in choice D) wrong??? But the use in E is correct...

To my understanding:
Rising inventories can lead and NOT can leads.
Singular-Plural case. So options B and D are eliminated.

C is having a problem, probably tense.
they were unaccompanied ........can lead

So only options left are A and E.
I'm unable to provide a split to select either of A or E.
It would be great if someone else could shed more light on this question.

Agree with you about B, C and D

Rising inventories, when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth.

(A) when unaccompanied correspondingly by increases in sales, can lead
when is not appropriate here. Also correspondingly unaccompanied sounds better than unaccompanied correspondingly
(E) if not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, can lead
If ... can/will verb.. is the corrent idiom.

I would love to hear the instructor's comment on this one

I think there is no need to provide explanation for B,C and D. Between A and E, A has awkward construction because "corresponding" should be w.r.t "increases in sales" but A introduces "by" between them. However, E uses the correct construction

Instructors,

One of the reasons I went very quickly to D and E is because I was under the impression that "when" for GMAT is best used to modify a location or time period. In this case, when is modifying "rising inventories".

Is this thinking wrong?

Also, I can confirm this is an official GMAT question (version 12 official guide question 12). Is there any way a moderator can change the title and move this into the right GMAT section?
