More than ever, paper is expected to be recycled this year, due to new mandatory recycling laws in municipalities across the nation.
(A) More than ever, paper is expected to be recycled this year
(B) It is expected that more paper than ever will be recycled this year than previously and that is
(C) The paper expected to be recycled this year is more than ever
(D) The amount of paper that will be recycled this year is expected to be greater than ever
(E) A great increase in the amount of paper that will be recycled this year is


Please tell me what is the wrong with choices A, B , and C.

I will appreciate if you can tell me whether the grammatical construction is wrong in Choice C.

i.e Subject (The paper expected to be recycled this year) + is+ Adverb(More than ever)+ prepositional phrase (due to new mandatory recycling laws in municipalities across the nation.)

choice c exhibits poor idiomatic usage. you aren't allowed to write 'x is more than ever'. you can have 'more x than ever', or x can be 'more [some quality] than ever', but not that first construction.

choice a carries the wrong meaning. its wording implies that the expectations of recycling paper, not the actual amount recycled, will rise to a record high.

choice b uses 'that' by itself, which is always a no-no on the gmat. the four 'pointing words' - this, that, these, those - can never appear by themselves as nouns. they can only appear as descriptors of other nouns: this boat, these people, those shoes, etc.

I always thought Amount of shold refer to something that can NOT be counted such as amount of work, amount of stress...paper I feel can be counted but I guess I'm wrong in thinking this way because it's sheets of paper that can be counted not paper by itself...

Am I correct in my conclusion?
