[ron: i did not say that was THE proper usage; i said that it was ONE proper usage.
DO NOT ASSUME THAT ALL ALTERNATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS ARE INCORRECT IF ONE CONSTRUCTION IS CORRECT.

My question is there any rule with respect to usgae of " as well as " followed by noun as in this case ( Ans B) .

Here the modifies "laying the foundation" modifies the the phrase "experimented extensively with light and vision"

correct. well done.

this is how all COMMA -ING modifiers work: they modify the entire preceding clause.
