I would truly appreciate any feedback on my current profile any advice on improvements would be great .

My Profile :

Nationality : Bangladesh
Age : 25
Undergraduate : BS Accounting, SUNY Buffalo , Cumulative GPA : 3.15
I have one year of international undergraduate study experience in Singapore and Malaysia

GMAT: Plan to take the test in September . Targeting a score of 700 ( my Manhattan GMAT diagnostic test score (without any preparation) was around 550 ).

Work Experience : 2 1/2 years of experience as an IT Business Analyst at a tech Start-up firm, followed by long term consulting engagements at AG Edwards and NYSE .


Extra curricular activities : Almost none

Leadership Experience : I have mentored and trained my counterparts in a merger related project .


Target Schools : Emory , Boston University, Rochester (Simon), Babson , Georgetown
Wish list school : Duke

Couple of questions :

I work on the tech side as a liaison between IT and the business , am I at a disadvantage because the IT applicant pool is extremely overrepresented by applicants that are GMAT and GPA stars ?

I am not an Indian, but when schools look at my profile will I be placed in the "Indian Male and IT professional" bucket ?

Is it true that if your GPA is less than 3.2 : the admissions committee may require some convincing that the applicant can meet the academic rigor of an MBA program ?

Thank you for your inquiry.

I highly doubt that as a Bangladeshi individual, the Admissions Committee will place you in the Indian category. However, you may need to educate the AdCom subtly to make sure that they understand that you are coming from an under-represented community, not the most over-represented one.

I really don’t think that your grades will be an issue at a 3.15. Generally, we grow a bit concerned at anything under a 3.0. I don’t think that you are at a disadvantage because of your scores at your target program. You will have to differentiate yourself with your start-up and life experiences in order to overcome limited extras. Nonetheless, with a solid GMAT score, you should be competitive at Emory, BU, Simon, Babson and Georgetown. In a competitive year, Duke will be a reach, but considering how many other competitive schools you have on your list, you should definitely stretch for one.
