Hi, I'm trying gauge my chances at a couple of different FT programs: Notre dame Mendoza and UT mccombs.
Degree from top 35 undergrad business school, 3.58 GPA, finance major
GMAT 670, skewed higher on verbal section, 5.0 writing
4 yrs as investment research analyst, one promotion, small company
Extracurriculars/leadership: captain golf team in college, some charity work
worried about my gmat quant score, but hoping strong academic performance in quant/stats classes helps offset.
Assuming recs and essays wont be an issue.
any thoughts?
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for writing in. You only provide high-level info so a full assessment would be difficult -- for example how will you position yourself for both UT and Notre Dame? Do those programs match your post-MBA goals?

Your extracurricular work focus should really be post-college, that's what programs want to see. You can certainly list your college activities but they just won't have the same weight.

While you say your score is skewed toward Verbal you don't say what the skew is. Assuming it is not horribly skewed, I'd consider you a down-the-middle candidate for these two schools.

Best of luck,

Hi Dan,
Thank you. For more context, gmat score was 41, 41 (92, 59 percentiles). So it is certainly skewed. Again, I don't know how much its worth but performed well in many quant classes undergrad. As far as recent extracurriculars, I can point to organizing volunteer efforts at food banks, shelters. Beyond that, not a whole lot. Looking to transition from world of publicly traded equities towards evaluating earlier stage businesses. ND I know has a strong reputation and curriculum that offers strong realworld application. UT Im probably not going to apply, but Ive learned that Indiana kelley has a flexible curriculum that fits my interests nicely. I hope this added information helps. Appreciate any more feedback you could offer. Tim

Hi again,

Your undergrad quant work is one tool you can use to combat a low Quant score. Other options include showing how you use quant skills in your daily work, and asking your recommenders to mention your quant abilities in their letters.

Best of luck,
