I think I have a unique background and I'm worried that this will hamper my chances, so I'm looking for a realistic profile evaluation.

1. 2.5 GPA from top 20 liberal arts college (11 yrs ago); Major in Econ, Minor Intl. Relations
2. Taking GMAT in 2 months, I think I'll fall in the 650-700 range.
3. 3.8 GPA in two grad-level summer classes from top 10 Intl. Relations school (classes in environmental econ and intl. negotiation)
4. 1 yr of law school (quit cause I realized I did not want to become a lawyer)
5. 9+ yrs work experience:
- 2 yrs research analyst (consulting/research company)
- 2+ yrs paralegal and DA's office intern
- 2+ yrs resource manager (software company)
- 1 yr Sr. associate, resource allocation (advertising)
(1.5+ yr gap, laid off/unemployed)
- 1 yr Admin associate (pharma/biotech)

I'm applying to UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, Claremont (Drucker) and Pepperdine (yes I want to move to Southern California!). Obviously, UCLA is my top choice but I don't think I have much of a chance there.

Hi Faarzein,

I agree your background is atypical of MBA applicants and you will likely face some scrutiny for your decision to leave law school, your GPA, and also the gap in your employment. While UCLA is likely a reach, USC could be a near-reach, and Pepperdine and Claremont could be receptive to your application if you clearly state why you are seeking an MBA now.

You may also want to check out our blog post on older applicants:
