I'm taking the gmat some time end of february, but i havent yet set a date. i was planning on continuing to practice until i feel confident, and then schedule the exam...how "last-minute" do you think I can schedule it and still find a spot?

I would schedule the exam at least one month before unless you are going to take it during the week. Spots are less likely to fill up on a weekday so you should be fine.
