Algebra Strategy Guide: Pg 101 Question 5

If |10Y-4| > 7, and Y < 1, which of the following could be y?
A) -.8
B) -.1
C) .1
D) 0
E) 1

My calculation:
|10Y-4| > 7
|10Y| > 11
|Y| > 11/10
|Y| > 1.1

=> Y>1.1 and Y <-1.1

Can you let me know whatz wrong with the above approach?

|10y-4| > 7 AND y < 1

Condition #1 Condition #2

(10y-4) > 7 OR (10y-4) < -7
10y > 11 10y < -3

y > 11/10 y < -3/10


The statement indicatates that Y < 1. Therefore Condition #1 can be excluded. Condition #2 says y < -3/10.

From the answer choices you provided, only "A" satisfies this criteria.
