Past Vs. Present Participle

As i can see among the posts, im not the only person who has problem with participles. My specific problem is that i can't recognise when i should use present participle and when past participle.
e.g: page 54 manhattan SC: The actor left quickly, shunning fans and ducking into a car.
why can't we use a past participle here?
or 12 OG Q47: why should we use present participle in the question?
