Hi,

In this question, what makes E a better option over D?

Does "so high as" in E play a vital role?I was thinkinking "so high as" when replaced by "high enough" makes
the sentence simpler and more concise..

Thanks a lot in anticipation...

This is a very subtle difference, expounded on in detail in the Sentence Correction strategy guide.

See the explanation under this link: http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/mgmat-sc-question-bank-t1280.html

Same thing here - the idea is to emphasize the extreme quality of category 5 'canes, not to imply that they are just good enough to do the damage described.
