Hi, Carla
If you are a student in one of our classes, you can sign up for your free half-hour weekly tutoring session and go over these problems with the tutor. If you are not a student but would like to go over these with someone, you can sign up for an hour of two of private tutoring (this is not free, unfortunately!). If you are interested in private tutoring, please visit our web site or call us (800.576.GMAT) for more info. You can also post individual questions to this forum and an instructor will respond, but it will not be an immediate give-and-take and it may take a few days to get answers to all of the questions. If you choose to do this, please start a separate thread for each question and please include the question bank name and problem number in the subject heading. It is also very useful if you explain what you do understand and tell us where you are struggling with any particular problem. |

Hi,
Thanks for writing back to me. I am taking one of the courses and in fact I had more questions than usual this week... and so I have already use my 30 minutes of tutor time. Here are some more specific details on my questions - if you have the time to help with any of them I would really appreciate it! 1. I went over the online solution and looked at the different cases for each for example {-1,0,4} can be used to eliminate (A) because it has a median of 0 etc.. For this question I wonder if you could offer some advice on an method to apply to problems like this one. I had started with a sample set of {1,2,3,4,5,6} and it took me a long time to try out the different cases that I just ended up trying to make a guess and went with the wrong answer choice. 4. I went over the online solution and noticed that in this solution some rules are presented that had not been in the guide. I was just wondering if there are other rules that you think it would be good to know related to statistics and standard deviation. Also I wonder if you might have any suggestions of a method to solve these types of problems. 5. The solution presented two methods (1) to try each answer choice for 1 piece of candy, then for 2, etc.. - I tried this method but was too slow and just ended up guessing. Method (2) that is presented is the "remainder and divisibility" method - I wonder if you could just explain this to me in greater detail. I generally find problems related to remainder to be challenging and maybe some help on this problem could help me. 7. I wonder if you could help me understand how to work with statement (1) for this example. I started with (2) which is easier and ended up not knowing how to work with (1) but I decided to chose answer D. It turned out the correct answer was just B. 9. This problem asked about the time scientists predicted it would take for the animal to become extinct. I am hesitant to go with answer choice E and found this problem challenging. I would just like to go over it for some more clarification of the solution. 10. I had trouble with statement (2) for this example. I was not sure how we are able to understand that each house that has a front porch would not have a front yard. 18. I would like to go over statement (2) for this example. 22. For this example I had tried to set up an equation like this: 8x+ 5x + 3X -4 = 16x + 5x + 3x => 16x - 4 = 24x ... which was wrong.. I undestood that to double the ratio you double the first part ==> 8:5 becomes 16:5 I was not clear on how to come up with this on my own for the ratio of books/clothes = 8x / (5x-4) = 16/5.. Once this is set up I am able to solve for x.. if you could help me understand how to set up this ratio with 8x / (5x - 4) = 16/5 that would be great. Thanks! Carla |

Hi, Carla, thanks - it would help very much if you would do one more thing - please post the actual questions (including answer choices) anytime you post a question. Others will want to look at the full questions, and unfortunately I can't post all of the text myself or I wouldn't be able to get through everyone's questions. Thanks!

You don't need to worry about posting the solutions - just the questions and answer choices. I just did about half of them and will get to the rest as soon as I can!

Hi, Carla
We recently did some rearranging of the threads and it's possible some of the old posts got "lost." I'll email our IT director and see what he can do. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! |

Found them! (Actually, Andrew found them.)
Go back to the main list page and go to the ManhattanGMAT Practice Tests folder. They look like they're all in there. :) |
