Correct me if i am wrong.

Let say we have X Z Y boxes and given median is Z=9
which implies, what ever happen the middle number is 9, When arranged in ascending order.

that is "X 9 Y" , So looking at this the number to the right (Y) of "9", should be minimum to have the number to the left (X) of "9" maximum (according to median property). that means Y= 9 and the result X=3.

Txs for reply,

Can you explain why :That means Y= 9 and the result X=3:.
In my understanding Total wt will be 21 kg(av mean of 3 boxes)
As median is 9 ,the remaining wt 12 kg will be distributed such that the lightest box is minimum

The total weight of X and Y to be distributed is 12. So, you want to min Y and max X. Y cannot be less than 9 because if it were, Y would change the median of 9. Hence , Y is 9 and X is 3.

ok, the posters in this thread have it covered.

people - we have a DEDICATED FOLDER FOR GMATPREP PROBLEMS. do not post GMATPREP problems in the general folders!

also, you've violated the forum rules re: naming the thread. you are supposed to name the thread by the first few words of the problem statement.

i'll move this thread to the correct location, and change the title, but please respect the forum rules. thank you.
