Consumers may not think of household cleaning products to be hazardous substances, but many of them can be harmful to health, especially if they are used improperly.

D) A consumer may not think of household cleaning products as
E) Household cleaning products may not be thought of, by consumers, as

I am getting a bit confused about pronoun referent issue. The pronoun “them” could either refer to hazardous substances or cleaning products. I do not see a clear referent. Can you explain the concept of pronoun referent?

Thanks

Hi, I just did that question yesterday.
When I first looked at the question, I had a similar problem. But then, I think that it makes sense that "them" refers to "products" since "hazardous substances" are obviously harmful, and the only possible referent is "products".
Anyway, I could be wrong :P
