Doubt on Comparison..

Hi,

I would like to ask a question about the comparisons. I know that we have to compare similar things; I can be confused in some problems. Since I can't give the full question from OG for copyright reasons, I will give a similar sentence to it. The original question is OG -Verbal Review SC #39.

D).., they gain weight more quickly than do those in the apartments.
E).., they gain weight more quickly than those in the apartments.

(ANS:E) The explanations says that they are comparing the nouns, not the actions so "do" in choice D is irrelevant and must be omitted. However, I think they are comparing the action of gaining weight so "do" must be repeated. Dear instructers, would you mind clarifiying this point? And if you have time could you talk about important points about the comparisons because, in my opinion, although MGMAT Sen-Corr is a bible, comparions are not explained in detail.

Thanks for your interest

Actually, it is a noun comparison: "they" are compared to "those in the apartments" on the basis of how quickly they gain weight.

Check out the links below. I think they will help.
