What are your thoughts on the optional essay?

If I have numerous weaknesses on my application, should I try to take this time to mitigate the top three? Or do you think this would dilute my overall message? Obviously, I would try to end with my "fit" and thus on a positive note.

For instance,
Address weak grades with GMAT + rigorous program, blah blah and then end with a "Ra Ra" on how I would contribute to the bschool community?

It is certainly wise to address problems, as you really can’t hide from them. Still, by discussing three weaknesses, you may be drawing too much attention to your negatives. Three is generally a limit, but, I am reluctant to recommend that number in a vacuum. It really is a case specific decision, based on your weaknesses.
