Asset allocators create - Problem with past participle

Hi Ron/Stacey,

I am getting confused with the usage of adverbial modifiers. Most of the times I am not able to understand what are they modifying.

E.g

Asset allocators create portfolios, often in the form of mutual funds, intended to turn in good results in both “bull” and “bear” markets.

Here...intended is modifying mutual funds or portfolios... ???

Any rules, tips, etc would really help.

Thanks in advance

X , modifier of X ,past participle .....

in this case... do we just remove the modifier ??

or can we also read it as

X,modifier of X , modifier of [modifier of X]

I hope you understand what I am trying to say.... :)

Thanks

I am curious to hear from tutors, though my understanding is that "modifier of x"(often in the form of mutual funds) is comma seperated non-essential clause and that non-essential clause could be removed without loss of clarity to the sentence. So, "intended to...." *must* modify portfolio and not mutual funds.

Hi, I'm sorry we missed this post. Did you ask the question again already in the general verbal thread, or should I move this over there so it can be answered?
