If we take the sentence as it is, then it may mean "William gained multiple recognition's for the 1942 film “Reap the Wild Wind,"".

There's a change in meaning. He does not get national recognition for the films, he gets it for the set designs. That's why "that" can't be an antecedent for "national recognition."

I hope that makes sense.
