past perfect and would

Can you insert words betwen "have" and the past particple? For example, would it be incorrect to say "would have in the past conceded". I've seen a correct answer choice say "would in the past have conceded", so I'm assuming its okay to add words in between would and have but am not sure about the first scenario?

i have performed the courtesy of moving this thread to the general verbal folder, where it belongs. (you originally posted it in the general math folder)

for the particular construction, "would in the past have conceded" is preferable to the alternate version you've posted.
there's really not a lot of sense in trying to figure out the reasons behind preferences like these; just learn the cases individually (they're basically examples of idiomatic usage), and use analogies to figure out the correct phrasing of other cases. for instance, in this case you don't separate the helping verb from the participle, but there are other situations in which you do do so (such as "the company has recently expanded", which is preferred to "the company recently has expanded").

english is crazy that way.
