OQ: Why are there so many Indian Engineers applying?

Just curious. It seems that so many engineers of Indian decent have decided to leave thier careers to pursue finance or consulting?
Why is this? Lack of jobs, pay, or intense competition?

Did I miss a meeting?

Thank you for your inquiry. I think that you are seeing this as a glass if half empty situation – you perceive that Indian engineers don’t like their jobs. From a glass is half full perspective, Indian engineers are ambitious and constantly trying to get ahead. I think that the latter scenario is much more likely.

Remember Darwin's Theory - Survival of the Fittest.

About 6-8 years back, almost everyone wanted to get into the IIT's (premier engineering college) in India. Over the last few years, there are too many engineers and moreover, a large number of engineers outside of the IITs are getting good jobs. Hence, the undergrad preferences of the Indian student are largely satsified. Moreover, with the growing awareness of several other fields than Engineering and Medicine, there are larger number of people beyond the undergrad level with a good degree in hand. Now with a major population beyond the this level, they are all waiting at the gates of a MBA schools. In two years time, the numbers will multiply.

In simple terms, the dream (the fittest) 5 years back was an Engineer (an Engineering degree) and now it is a Manager (a MBA degree).

Also, a lot of the engineers who came from India to the US during the boom ~7-10 years ago have now acquired experience and are trying to make a foray into management.
