Mr. Sami's Stocks

W 112
X 56
Y 94
Z 45

The table above shows the number of shares of each of the 5 stocks owned by Mr. Sami. If Mr. Sami was to sell 20 shares of stock X and buy 24 shares of stock Y, what would be the increase in the range of the number of shares of the 5 stocks owned by Mr. Sami.

A. 4
B. 6
C. 9
D. 15
E. 20

Would really appreciate it if someone could help explain how they arrived at the correct answer. Thanks.

This question tests the conept of RANGE, which is the difference between the Bigggest number and the smallest number is a given set. So, initially, what is the Range of the set (here the values in the set are the number of shares: 68,112 etc) - Simply 112-45= 67, right?

Now, after the transactions are made, how are the values affected in the set? You will see that Stock Y has 118 shares and Stock X goes down to 36.

What is the NEW range: 118-36= 82.

The questions asks - "what would be the increase in the range of the number of shares ....."

New range - old range = 82-67 = 15.
