Chapter 6 Page 98 explaination #13

#Regina returned the dress to the store,which was torn at one of the seams.
ans- Regina returned the dress ,which was torn at one of the seams,to the store

in theory its given that COMMA shall only be used with "which" when its accompanied by a non essentially modifier....(i may be missing some point here but this is not the essential point that i am making)
isn't underlined portion is ESSENTIAL modifier as it is explicitly state which dress she returned,otherwise she may has returned any dress...(this is main point i am stating)


please correct me if i am wrong and please support your answer with example and explanation... which will make it easy for me to understand.

In the original sentence, "which was torn at one of the seams" modifies store rather than dress. Logically this is incorrect. To fix this error, the sentence has to be modified to "Regina returned the dress, which was torn at one of the seams, to the store". In the new sentence, modifier modifies dress.

U missed my point
I specially mentioned i dont have much problem with ans , its position is good .. only problem i have is that the COMMA .. this modifier is a essential one ... not a non essential modifier...which require COMMA..

Yes you are correct that WHICH is always used in the case of non-essential modifiers. In this sentence it is implicitly assumed that Regina bought one dress, this is the reason why non-essential modifier has been used here.

Omit the modifier #"Regina returned the dress to the store" the sentence still makes sense..here the modifier is not needed to identify the dress.
If the sentence was
"Yesterday Regina bought five dresses, but she needs to return the one that is torn at one of the seams" ...
here we need to identify the torn dress.
