What is the value of xy?

(1) (x +y)^2 = 37
(2) (x - y)^2 = 17

Please make sure to read (and follow!) the instructions in the stickies for posting test problems.

1) post problems in the appropriate folders - we have folders for MGMAT CAT problems, problems from the red strategy guides, GMATPrep problems, and a general math folder (but make sure your problem is not from a banned source - see the stickies in the relevant folders for a list of banned sources). 2) cite the source for your problem - unless you cite the author, we cannot answer the question (and, in fact, we'll have to delete the thread!)
3) Use the first 5 to 8 words fo the problem as your subject heading.
