Instructor,
This is from HW bank. The answer given is (E). I now wonder can't (C) also be interpreted as the statement says, or how a statement would be like to desc (C)?

(10 – 7)n = n + 5
7n = 10(n + 5)
(7 – 10)n = n + 5
10 – 7n = n + 5
7n – 10 = n + 5

Ten subtracted from seven times a number is five more than that number.
(10 – 7)n = n + 5
7n = 10(n + 5)
(7 – 10)n = n + 5
10 – 7n = n + 5
7n – 10 = n + 5
First address the portion in bolded;let the original number be n
Therefore, 7 times the number is 7n
Going forward, the question says thay you've got to subtract 10 from it.
Therefore, 7n-10---(1)
Furthermore, (1) is given to be equal to five more than the original number(n)
=>7n-10=n+5( Hence option E)

I tried to say that the original can be interpreted in two ways, wh y the 1st one is chosen? And what is the expression if we meant: (7 – 10)n = n + 5?
Ten subtracted from seven times a number is five more than that number, or
Ten subtracted from seven times a number is five more than that number

You need to clear your concepts on BODMAS/ PEMDAS. The order of execution is Brackets of Division multiplication addition subtraction. Thank you gokul_nair1984. I don't think I am stuck'd with BODMAS/ PEMDAS. I am confused with English language.
Instructor, I don't think I am convinced that the BODMAS/ PEMDAS rule should also be applied on English expression, but only on Math expression, aren't they?

BODMAS is a defined rule for all executions. It has to be used in all situations(Directly where mathematics is involved and indirectly when english language has to be interpreted in mathematical terms)

mymisc, this IS math. just because it's written using words doesn't change the fact that there are rules that must be applied. we all know that 2+2=4, but does it totally lose its meaning when i write it as "two plus two equals four"?
