Kindly go through the sentence below:

1. The players' helmets need to be repainted so that they will be ready to be used at practice on Sunday.
Ans (according to the book) : The sentence is correct.

Doubt: isnt the "they" ambiguous? what is it refering to? players' or helmets?

They is not ambiguous, because the antecedent can't be a possessive noun. Think of it this way: a possessive is similar in this regard to an adjective or other modifier.

"The red helmets need to be painted so they will be ready..."

No confusion about "they" refering to "red." There really is only one noun here. The same is true with "player's helmets," the only noun is "helmet," as "player's" just describes which helmets.
