I took the 1st CAT today and scored a 690 (Quant - 45 and Verbal - 39). However, I got 18 questions incorrect in Quant and 13 questions incorrect in Verbal.

Is it possible to score a 45 and 39 in Quant and Verbal respectively after getting so many questions wrong?

Infact, I got 5 questions wrong in the first 10, 5 questions wrong from the 11th to the 20th question (13, 14, 15, 15 & 17) and the last 6 questions wrong (32, 33, 34, 35, 36 & 37)

Hi,

The GMAT is a Computer Adaptive Test. This means that every time you answer a question correctly, it gives you a more difficult question, and every time you answer a question incorrectly, it gives you an easier question. The result is that no matter where you are in terms of your ability level, you will always be answering about half of the questions wrong. The key is to be able to answer high-level questions wrong, so that even if you're getting 800-level questions wrong, you would still be getting 700-level questions right.

You can find a detailed explanation of how the GMAT finds your score here: http://www.manhattangmat.com/strategy-s ... -score.cfm

Hi Caitlin,
Just purchased the MGMAT CAT package. Had a question . Do you suggest a specific number of days prior to the actual GMAT date that the candidate should start taking these CAT's ? Or is it pretty much whenever a candidate wants to and has no science behind it ?

Hi,

I would definitely not suggest just taking CATs at random to practice for your exam!

Depending on your time-frame, we actually have two articles that I think you should find helpful:

The first is for how to plan and prepare for your GMAT, and you can find it here: http://www.manhattangmat.com/strategy-s ... t-prep.cfm

The second is if you have a very short time frame. Please note that we definitely suggest spending more than two weeks studying if you have the time! http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... n-a-hurry/

Best of luck with your prep.
