Hi Tim,
Please let me know how does it become to 2/a. I solved with 1/2a. I am always confused with these rate & work question.
Please help.
Thanks,
Abhishek
Abhishek,
Let's use some real numbers to illustrate where you went wrong.
Let's assume that I can clean my house in 4 hours. Thus, my rate is 1/4.
If I become twice as fast at cleaning my house, I can now clean it in 2 hours. My new rate is 1/2.
How do I go from 1/4 to 1/2? I multiply by 2 in the numerator. 1/4 * 2 = 2/4 or 1/2.
If I multiply by 2 in the denominator, I get 1/4 * 1/2 = 1/8. I am now saying that I clean my house in 8 hours, meaning that I became half as fast. I went the wrong way.
Hope this makes more sense!
