Data Sufficiency Question: Is XY > 0?

(1) X - Y > -2
(2) X - 2Y < -6

A - Statement 1 alone is sufficient, 2 is not
B - Statement 2 alone is sufficient, 1 is not
C - Both statements together are sufficient, but neither alone is
D - Both statements alone are sufficient
E - Neither statement is sufficient

The answer is (C), however, I am struggling at why this is the case, because can't X still be positive or negative?
