Is x –y+1 greater than x+y-1 ?

Is x –y+1 greater than x+y-1 ?
1) X>0
2) Y<0

x-y+1>x+y-1... or 2>2y...1>y...if y<1,then surely y<0..suff

yeah.

basically, what this poster is saying (in very, very abbreviated form) is that you should simplify the inequality from the prompt, since you have identical terms on both sides.
the x's just cancel.
move the y's to the right.
move the 1's to the left.

you get "Is 2 > 2y ?"
which reduces to, "Is 1 > y?" (i.e., "Is y less than 1?")

once you've done this rephrasing, the answer should become clear.

TAKEAWAY:
if you see THE SAME TERMS ON BOTH SIDES of an inequality or equation, SIMPLIFY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
