The structures of the above two sentences look identical except 'are' in the first one. If the second appeared in a SC question, would it be correct without 'are' between 'than' and 'others'?

If I had to select between the one with the 'are' and another without it, which one would be better?

Hi smjun1,
Unfortunately I had to delete the OG questions because those are not allowed to be used on these forums by request of the GMAC. Please see the forum guidelines: read-before-you-post-general-verbal-folder-guidelines-t2718.html

Both of the structures that you cite are actually okay. The first one is comparing clauses (a noun and a verb) and the second is comparing nouns. The GMAT would not make you choose between the two since they are both correct. Sorry I couldn't help more! :-)
