Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won a number of prizes for his work, including the Nobel Prize in Literature and two Whitbread Book of the Year awards.

1.Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won a number of prizes for his work, including
2.The number of prizes won by Irish poet Seamus Heaney include
3.Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won numbers of prizes for his work, including
4.The numbers of prizes won by Irish poet Seamus Heaney include
5.Seamus Heaney's Irish poetry has won a number of prizes for him, including

In the original sentence (or the 1st choice ) ," including ...." is modifying which part of sentence?
1.Few say that in sentence like
Subject Verb Object , "including ....."
including ... modifies action(i.e in the above sentence "including..." is modifying verb.

2. Lot of forum say that "including ...." modifies the subject

3. Here in the above sentence "including .... " is modifying object.

I am totally confused .Please help me out in this.
Thanks in advance!

IMO : A

As per Manhattan SC guide, you can always replace: a number of by Many/Much.

1.Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won a number of prizes for his work, including

Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won many prizes for his work, including

so here, including actually modifying "many prizes".

2.The number of prizes won by Irish poet Seamus Heaney include
includeS is require here, so Out.

3.Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won numbers of prizes for his work, including

It changes the meaning by saying..numbers including nobel prizes.

4.The numbers of prizes won by Irish poet Seamus Heaney include

Again includeS is require.

5.Seamus Heaney's Irish poetry has won a number of prizes for him, including

Here including is ambigous here, because including can refer to poetry as well as many prizes.

Thanks for the reply Sunny!
But my doubt is still there.
I didn't face any problem in getting the answer.
My doubt is related to the role played by this type of stucture.
...., VERBing ....
What "VERBing ..." modifies => SUBJECT , ACTION OR OBJECT of the preceding clause

hi rajatee

1.Irish poet Seamus Heaney has won a number of prizes for his work, including

most of the time , -ing phrase after the comma acts as an adverbial modifier.

So, -ing phrase either describe the action of the previous clause, or expand it, of give the consequence of the previous clause.

In above example (including) is actually modifying the previous clause and giving the examples of some incidences when seamus WON a number of prizes.

Expers correct me if I am wrong.......................

is VERBing modifying the Obj?

The -ing form of a verb usually following the comma would modify the preceding clause. However, if it did not have the comma, it would modify the object. The is the general pattern; modifiers are pretty tricky, and there are special cases.
