Thanks for writing in. I appreciate your point of view, and GMAT is just one part of the application. Work experience and community leadership are other important parts, and it sounds like you'll be stronger there. I don't think the schools will so much notice that you had an extra year and didn't use it to prepare again, but a 640 will be a significant weakness for the schools you list. A 670 is still going to be tough at the top schools but will at least approach the bottom of the median-80% range at UCLA (680 is the lower end of the range).
Ultimately you need to prove you can handle the MBA coursework. Would you consider community college/online courses in areas such as Finance, Stats and Marketing to help show your academic abilities, as well as your motivation to improve your profile?
