Improved technology and equipment often result in fewer injuries during high-risk activities such as rock climbing and scuba diving. But participant education also plays a large role in reducing the number of injuries sustained during these activities. People who are poorly trained in these activities run a much higher risk of injury even if provided with the latest and best equipment.

Which of the following can be properly inferred from the information above?

a)Training is a more important safety factor than equipment in high-risk activities.
b)People who are properly trained in their activities do not sustain injuries.
c)The safety benefits of the latest equipment can be offset by inadequate preparation.
d)Rock climbing and scuba diving are more risky than any other activities.
e)People with the latest equipment often neglect proper training.

Why is B wrong ?

Poor Training(X) -> Injury (Y) is what the stimulus says...
If we have X -> Y scenario under what scenario will the answer choices be correct ? Will not X -> not Y be one of the correct answer choices?

What about not Y -> not X ?

B says not X (properly trained) -> not Y (no injury) ... will this be correct?

Hi Sidd,

Answer choice B is very extreme and not true based on the premise. It is extreme because it is saying that trained people do not sustain injuries. The truth is that they have a lower risk of being injured.

The premise that you have used as support for this answer:

People who are poorly trained in these activities run a much higher risk of injury

So the way I would put it:
Poor training(X) -> higher risk of injury (Y)
Well trained -> Lower risk of injury

It does not follow from the premise that well trained people do not get injured at all and that is why choice B is incorrect.

Sunil
