Following is a question from GMAT prep

In 1713 , Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad,a work that,taking him seven years until completion ,and that literary critic Samuel Johnson,Pope's contemporary ,pronounced the greatest translation in any language

I am totally clueless as to why answer is B
any help would be highly appreciated

c,d,e are eliminated as there is no antecedent for the pronoun "it".
a is incorrect as the present participle is incorrectly used. We know that the work is completed and hence we shall use a simple past.
