Gmat Prep Equations Question

Hi,

Can anyone help me with the below DS

On the number line the distance bet x & y is greater than the distance between x & z. Does Z lie between x & y on the number line.

a) xyz<0

b) xy<0



What is the value of 5x^2 + 4x + 1

a) x(x+2) = 0

b) x = 0

I selected C but it seems B was correct.

Please explain.
