What is difference between fewer than and less than?

Briefly, ”fewer than” is used when the items are countable (eg. hats, number of airplane flight delays), and ”less than” is used when the items are not countable, which usually means they must be measured with a measuring device such as a beaker or clock (eg. water, cumulative time of flight delay)..
