Post subject: Does data set A = {1, 2, x} have a greater standard Posted: Sun Jul 15, 2007 7:25 pm |

The question reads as follows:
Does data set A = {1, 2, x} have a greater standard deviation than data set
B = {1, 2, 3}?
(1) x is greater than 3.
(2) x is less than 1.
In my opinion it appears that statements 1 and 2 contradict each other (how can x be greater than 3 if it is less than 1?). If I understand the idea of DS correctly, the statements can never contradict each other. Can someone please explain what I am not understanding here?
Thanks!
Nina

Can you please give me the name of the question so I can go look it up in the system? You can find the name on the list of questions when you go in to review your test. Thanks!

Thanks! And great catch, Nina - you are completely right. We've pulled this one from our CAT. Looks like you're ready for the test! :D

One more thing! We'd like to offer you a little something as a thank you for catching this. Do you already have a test simulation booklet? (The laminated booklet you use during the test for scratch paper.) If not, we'd like to send you one - let me know!

Thanks for the offer. That'd be great! Can I send my address via email instead of on this forum?

Yeah - just email my colleague Danielle ( danielle@manhattangmat.com). She already knows about you! (I've told her to look out for an email from Nina, so mention that and the fact that you're the one who found a flaw in one of our problems on the forum.)
Again, nice job! :)

RGRDS Yes, the statements can never contradict each other, and it is impossible to have a number that is both greater than 3 and less than 1. We have pulled this question from our CATs.

I am trying to see where I am going wrong in visualizing the solution. Sorry, if this is very basic/ stupid. When I first read this question, I imagined X on the number line. For the first statement, X starts from 3 and goes. And for the second statement, X starts from 1 and goes in the opposite direction. When we are thinking about the possibility for 'D' (individually sufficient), don't we need to think both as independent statements? In that case, wouldn't this be valid? When we think about 'C' as solution, of course on combining the two statements, it's not valid.

Yes, but it's still the case that the two statements are not supposed to contradict each other no matter what. That's why we pulled it.
