In the original (wrong) sentence, the comparison was set up to be between "the tycoon contributed" and "anyone else." Not a parallel comparison.
The answer key sentence fixes the problem by comparing "the tycoon contributed" and "did anyone else." We need that verb "did" in there to make it both logically and structurally similar. Your solution is admittedly even more parallel by virtue of the order of the wording. That said, both version can be deemed correct. If both were to appear on a GMAT problem, you could argue that your version is superior because it's more parallel. In all likelihood, though, these two version would probably not be pitted against each other on a real GMAT problem. Rey |
