Balding is much more common among White males than males of other races.
(A) than
(B) than among
(C) than is so of
(D) compared to
(E) in comparison with

OA = B

Im still not clear why A is incorrect. Are we not comparing WHITE MALES with MALES of other races? I think A is also comparing the same two sets of people.

Comparison WITH also means comparing differences. Can someone please explain why A) and E) are incorrect?

I know the correct answer is because of parallelism, but How is it better than B) do we give more weightage to parallelism when we have a choice available with parallelism?

does anyone have a screen shot of this problem?

for a couple of reasons, this doesn't really seem like an official question. before we proceed with answering it, we'd like to see a screenshot, just as verification.
sorry if that causes any inconvenience.

Hi Ron,

I have read a lot of your posts. Your explanation style is very clear & make the point really well.

This is q# 254 from og 10. Can you please explain what makes a better than b.

I think "among" being repeated - it's redundant.

Thanks
Aman

By the way, the OA explanation is

"B, the best choice, correctly uses the idiomatic construction more common among x than among y. In A, the
comparison is not parallel and not clear; one illogical but available reading is that balding is more common
among White males than are males of other races.
To be clear, the sentence should read more common
among White males than among ...."

I must say that OG writers have quite a sense of humor!

Though I'm sure but I believe A is wrong because it sounds like we are comparing "balding" with the "males of other races". So, we need to add "among".

Secondly, when describing the similarities between unlike things, the idiom “compare to” is used. When describing the differences between like things, the idiom “compare with” is used.

In option E, we are not describing the difference..

the problem is that the comparison must be between the "among" phrases. clarity of an answer choice is not an issue if it is grammatically incorrect to start with..
