1 yard of sting, cut into 1/3 and 1/4

I have a question on this type of problem. I asked my intsructor in my 9w course but now that its over I forget what he said! (terrible note taker) Anyway, the question is from the OG 11th edition

how do you attack these type of problems? I know drawing a line and trying to cut it into 1/3's and 1/4's is the long way, Is there a short cut?

Aceinthehole, sorry but we CANNOT answer or discuss any questions from the official guide on this forum. we would like to be able to do so but it GMAT has invoked copyright privileges. please stick to m-gmat cat questions in this folder. good luck studying!
